TIP:
To convert a countertop blender recipe to an immersion blender, simply use a container that will best fit the recipe size. Use a speed that best matches the recommended countertop blender setting and make sure to slowly move your hand blender blades around the container for even blending. You’ll likely need to blend for a bit longer, but keep any eye on your results and stop when you’ve reached your desired texture. When using an immersion blender for smoothies and milkshakes, reverse the order in which you add ingredients.

IMMERSION BLENDER TIPS & TRICKS:
Learn how to use an immersion hand blender to help achieve your ideal results for tons of different blender recipes. While nearly every recipe will vary, these tips and tricks for using an immersion blender can be applied to many of your creations, including pureed soups, milkshakes and more.
1. USE THE RIGHT SIZE CONTAINER FOR YOUR RECIPES
It’s best to use a container that will be around ⅔ full with all ingredients added. You’ll need a little extra space to allow ingredients to move around as you blend to help prevent splatters and spills. You’ll also need enough depth to keep the hand blender blades fully immersed in your ingredients.
For blending small amounts, choose a tall and narrow container to make sure you’ll have enough depth.
If whipping ingredients, only fill your container about halfway so there is room for your mixture to expand.
2. KEEP BLADES BELOW THE SURFACE
Keeping the blades below the surface of your ingredients will help prevent splatters as well as help with even, thorough blending.
3. START BLENDING SLOWLY
It’s generally considered a best practice to start with a lower speed setting and increase if needed. Get things moving gradually and avoid splatters and ingredient eruptions from a sudden burst of power.
4. MOVE THE BLADES PROPERLY FOR YOUR DESIRED BLENDING RESULTS
SMOOTH: For most completely pureed recipes, blend at a slight angle as you slowly move the blades around the container for even blending.
SMOOTH & CHUNKY COMBO: Holding the blender at a slight angle, blend for 2 seconds in one spot. Move to a different part of the container and blend for 2 more seconds. Proceed to blend portions of the mixture in 2 second intervals until you have a smooth base but some chunks remain for texture.
AERATED: If you are aerating ingredients for recipes like whipped cream or meringue, move the blades a little more quickly and in all directions. Move up and down as well, but be sure to always keep the blades below the surface.
5. RINSE IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE
To avoid tough, stuck-on foods, rinse your blender blades and arm immediately after using. Most hand blenders, including KitchenAid® immersion blenders, feature removable dishwasher-safe arms to help minimize cleanup efforts even more.
CAN YOU PUREE WITH AN IMMERSION BLENDER?
Yes, an immersion blender is perfect for quickly pureeing a range of recipes from smooth soups to creamy smoothies, delicious dips like vegan queso and more. The stick blender design allows you to puree ingredients in nearly any dish shape and size. You can take on brunch pancakes for the whole family or just a quick salad dressing for one.
CAN YOU FROTH MILK WITH AN IMMERSION BLENDER?
Yes—the immersion blender will create a rich and thick foam for your favorite coffee drinks. Just blend continuously for about one minute in a deep container. Keep in mind that the volume of your milk will increase during the frothing process. Fill your container no more than 1/2 full and be careful to keep the blades below the surface to avoid splatters or spills.
WHAT TO USE IN PLACE OF AN IMMERSION BLENDER?
You can use a countertop blender for any immersion blender task, keeping the size of the jar in mind. A food processor is another good substitution for a hand blender, especially when it comes to pureeing. For tasks that require aerating ingredients, like frothing milk or beating eggs and cream, a hand mixer or stand mixer is a good alternative.
If you’re looking for an immersion blender alternative that’s great for smaller portions, explore KitchenAid® countertop blenders paired with a personal blending jar or small batch jar.
