Air Fryer Steak Recipe

You can create a delicious steak dinner even in the winter months by using an air fryer. The air fryer can help sear the outside of the steak and lock in the juices, cooking your steak to your liking (also helpful when reheating steak). New York strip and ribeye are the best cuts for air frying because they are typically thinner cuts and end up with great flavor and texture. Tri-tip and top round also work well. Your steak should be about 1 inch thick for best results.

This guide will show you how to air fry steak that you can pair with a baked potato or roasted vegetables for a dinner party meal or a weeknight at home.

Step 1. Prepare steak

The steak should first be brought to room temperature. This takes about 15 minutes. Then, lightly brush the steak on all sides with butter or oil, if desired, and season well with salt, pepper or your favorite seasonings.

You can also marinate your steak before air frying. Marinating the steak before air frying is recommended particularly for leaner cuts, as they are more likely to dry out without a marinade.

Step 2. Preheat countertop oven with air fry

Preheat your air fryer toaster oven or countertop oven to 400°F.

Step 3. Cook steak

Once the air fryer and the steak are ready, place the steak on the rack or basket at least an inch from any other foods so the air can circulate properly. Cook for approximately 12-24 minutes, flipping midway through, if necessary with your specific air fryer model. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature. The USDA recommended temperature for beef is 145°F.

Step 4. Allow steak to rest

Once your steak is cooked to your desired doneness, remove it from the air fryer and place it on a plate or pan. Place lightly tented aluminum foil over it and allow the steak to rest for 10 minutes.
