STEP 5: DIVIDE THE DOUGH AND BAKE

There are a few ways you can divide the dough to make your cookies. For standard round cookies, use a cookie scoop to make evenly portioned cookies. If you want to create shaped cookies, roll the lightly floured dough with a rolling pin and cut the dough into stars, gingerbread men, trees or other festive shapes with your cookie cutters.

Place the cookies on your baking tray at least two inches apart and bake for 8–10 minutes. Remove the baking tray from the oven and let them cool completely before topping with icing and sprinkles.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE CAN I MAKE CHRISTMAS COOKIES?

When stored correctly in the freezer, tightly wrapped in freezer-proof packaging, undecorated Christmas cookies are good for sometimes up to a year. Only make your cookies up to three days ahead of time if you plan to store them at room temperature.

HOW DO I PACKAGE CHRISTMAS COOKIES?

If you’re baking Christmas cookies as a homemade gift for friends and loved ones, you can package fresh cookies in a festive tin lined with wax paper, a personalized cookie jar or in cellophane bags tied with colorful ribbons.

To give your cookie package even more charm, you can add custom holiday gift tags, candy canes or even a personally penned notecard with the recipe so they can pass the gift on for years to come.

HOW DO I STORE CHRISTMAS COOKIES?

Keeping your Christmas cookies fresh means keeping them away from open air. Once your Christmas cookies have cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. Line each layer of cookies with wax paper to help prevent them from sticking.

TIP:

Help keep your cookies soft and chewy by adding a piece of white bread to your storage container.

HOW DO I FREEZE CHRISTMAS COOKIES?

Freezing your Christmas cookies can help them last longer, allowing you to get ahead of baking for your next holiday gathering. Layer cooled cookies between sheets of parchment paper in a sealed plastic freezer bag and store for up to a year.
